CHAPTER SIX

‘NERVOUS?’

‘A bit. Although I’m not sure I’m the one who’s supposed to need reassurance today. You have to be the most laid-back bride I’ve ever seen, Soraya. No one would ever guess you’re about to marry into the royal family before the eyes of the world. Are you on drugs?’

Soraya laughed. ‘No drugs. I’m just happy to be marrying the love of my life.’

Isolde couldn’t believe her sister was this relaxed on her wedding day without some sort of sedative to keep her from flailing around. Worked up about appearing in public, Isolde had already had a breakdown over her wayward locks and smudged mascara, and she was only background crew. Her anxiety over the forthcoming day had caused her stomach to roll so much she hadn’t been able to touch the champagne breakfast that had been laid out for them this morning, and she was only the bridesmaid.

Mind you, she had a lot on her mind. Including the prospect of spending the day in Amir’s company, something they’d both learned wasn’t a good idea these days. Left unsupervised they tended to get a bit carried away. Perhaps it was a blessing in disguise they’d be surrounded by photographers and film crews for most of the day. Hopefully it should remove that temptation of throwing themselves at one another if there was a danger of someone catching it on camera. They’d have some explaining to do to a lot of people if they were caught in a compromising position.

There was also the matter of Farah’s planned surprise. Although it was scheduled to happen during the evening reception, which would be held for family and friends only, away from the press, there was a lot at stake. She didn’t want anyone to be embarrassed or disappointed if things didn’t work out the way they hoped, especially Amir and Farah. Nor did she want Amir to be mad at her for keeping his daughter’s secret. There was a separate anxiety swirling around her body at how Amir was going to react and if she was going to be in the firing line. Given that he was a senior member of the royal family, there was a real possibility she’d committed some sort of treason, and a firing squad might be seen as just punishment for a Jezebel who kept kissing the widowed Prince and was now interfering in family matters.

‘I’m so happy for you, sis. You look beautiful.’ That happiness she spoke of was radiating out of her every pore, her love for Raed shining brightly on her face.

‘Well, I did have a team of stylists.’ Soraya screwed up her nose, batting away any compliments, but she couldn’t convince Isolde she was anything but stunning today.

Her ivory silk dress clung beautifully to her curves, though preserved her modesty with the lace collar and sleeves. She was every inch the fairy-tale princess.

‘We had the same team and I do not even compare. I think I have so many pins in my hair
